Bargeboards on the Gable
Bargeboards are the boards that run up the sloping edges of a gable end, finishing the roof where there's no gutter. On timber they rot from the top down; in uPVC they're replaced with the fascia, at about the same rate a metre, €45 to €98 fitted. Measure the slope, not the width of the gable.

- €45 to €98a metre, fitted
- The slopeis what you measure
- With the fasciaso the corners match
What goes wrong
- Rot at the top, where the ridge meets the gable.
- Rot at the bottom, where the bargeboard meets the fascia.
- Loose verge tiles or slates above them, letting water behind.
Replacing them
The old boards come off, the timber behind is checked, and new uPVC bargeboards go on, usually with the fascia and soffit at the same time so the corners match. Many roofers fit a dry verge at the same time: plastic caps along the edge tiles, instead of mortar that cracks and falls out.

Check your soffit and fascia
Four taps: what you see under the roof edge, the house, what the boards are now and the county. You see what it most likely is, the fix and our price. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want one fascia and soffit company that covers your county to ring you.
Questions people ask
Are bargeboards the same as fascia?
Same material, different place: fascia runs along the eaves, bargeboards up the gable.
Do bargeboards need scaffolding?
On a two-storey gable, usually a tower or scaffolding.
What's a dry verge?
Plastic caps along the gable's edge tiles, instead of mortar.
