Cleaning Soffit and Fascia

Green or black streaks on uPVC soffit and fascia are algae and dirt, not rot. A soft wash or a brush on a long pole cleans them from the ground, with the gutter faces done at the same time. Cleaning is a fraction of new boards. Only timber that's soft under the paint needs replacing.

Green isn't rot

A real job: the same fascia and soffit, half washed. Most green boards need a clean, not new boards.

The same fascia and soffit, half washed: green on the left, clean on the right. A real job, cleaned from the ground with a pole.

Green, black or rotten?

  • Green: algae, on the north side and under trees. Washes off.
  • Black streaks: dirt carried down by rain. Washes off.
  • Chalky white: old uPVC weathering. A clean helps; it doesn't come back new.
  • Soft, flaking timber: rot. Needs new boards.

How it's cleaned

From the ground, with a brush on a water-fed pole or a soft wash, the fascia, the soffit and the gutter faces in one go. No high pressure on the boards or the felt behind them. The gutters can be cleared out the same day: see gutter cleaning in Dublin.

Questions people ask

How often should fascias be cleaned?

Every two or three years, more under trees or on the north side.

Can I clean them myself?

From the ground with a brush on a pole, yes. Not from a ladder with a pressure washer.

Will cleaning damage old uPVC?

Not at low pressure with the right cleaner.
